Yacht Captain (CY)

Become a Yacht Captain

The title of Yacht Captain is the highest nautical certification, allowing you to govern vessels up to 24 meters in length and navigate without distance limitations from the coast. To obtain this qualification, you need to meet certain requirements and pass several theoretical and practical exams.

Previous requirements

  1. Possess the title of Yacht Master.
  2. Approve the corresponding theoretical examination.
  3. Carry out safety and navigation practices.
  4. Submit a psychophysical aptitude report in accordance with chapter IV of Royal Decree 875/2014.
  5. Take the short-range radio operator course. If this course has already been taken previously, it will not be necessary to take it again.

Training and exams

The Yacht Captain course is divided into two modules that you must pass:

  1. Navigation Module: Includes astronomical navigation theory and calculations.
  2. Generic Module: It includes subjects such as Meteorology, Oceanography and English.
The Yacht Captain has a deep knowledge of navigation and orientation techniques. You can use navigation instruments, interpret maritime charts, calculate courses and distances, and use global positioning systems (GPS) to plot an accurate and safe route.

Title attributions

Basic:

  1. Government of motorized pleasure boats up to 24 meters in length, which allows navigation without geographical limits.
  2. Government of nautical motorcycles, within the specific navigation limits applicable to them, in accordance with their technical characteristics.

Complementary: 

  1. Government of sailing pleasure boats up to 24 meters in length, which allows navigation without geographical limits.

Price

Theoretical: 400€

What is NOT included?
-Exam processing and fees: €100
– To take the Yacht Captain exam, it is essential to have a valid Yacht Master title or the Expedition receipt.
– To obtain the Yacht Captain qualification, apart from passing the theoretical exam you need to do the practical work


Mandatory practices: 

Safety and navigation practices: 350€ 
It is about doing internships in 
48-hour crossing regime.

Optional practices: 180€
Sailing Qualification Practices: This involves carrying out specific sailing practices for two days. In total 16 hours of practices. 
*These practices are not necessary if you already have the Sailing Yacht Skipper.
