Yacht Skipper (PY)
Requirements to obtain the title
To obtain the title of Yacht Skipper, it is necessary to meet the following requirements:
- Minimum age: You must be over 18 years old.
- Have the PER title: It is essential to have previously obtained the title of Recreational Boat Skipper.
- Pass the theoretical exam: This exam covers knowledge of navigation, safety, meteorology, communications and maritime law.
- Carry out navigation practices: You must complete a minimum of 48 hours of navigation practices, distributed over at least two voyages, which include day and night navigation.
- Medical check: Present a medical certificate proving that you are in adequate physical and mental condition to steer a pleasure boat.
Course modality
Taboga offers various training modalities to adapt to your needs:
- In-person and online courses: You can choose to attend classes in person or study at your own pace from home.
- Mandatory internships: They include motor, sailing and radio practices.
- Study material and exams: You will have access to a virtual classroom, teaching materials, tests and exams to prepare properly.
Title attributions
Once you have obtained the Yacht Skipper title, you will be able to:
- Govern boats up to 24 meters in length.
- Sail up to 150 nautical miles from the coast.
- Carry out day and night navigation.
Govern jet skis within the specific navigation limits applicable to them. - In addition, the Yacht Skipper title allows you to carry out certain professional activities, such as transporting supplies, maneuvers in ports and beaches, sea trials and steering lifesaving vessels.

What is NOT included?
-Exam processing and fees: €80
– To take the Yacht Skipper exam, it is essential to have a valid Pleasure Boat Skipper title or the Expedition receipt.
– To obtain the Yacht Skipper qualification, apart from passing the theoretical exam you need to do the practices
Mandatory practices:
Safety and navigation practices: 350€
It is about doing internships in 48-hour crossing regime.
Optional practices: 180€
Sailing Qualification Practices: This involves carrying out specific sailing practices for two days. In total 16 hours of practices.
*These practices are not necessary if you already have the PER enabled for Vela.
